David O’Docherty Ultrasound Assembly George Square

Another quick post for one of the funniest stand up shows of the Fringe this year. We got to see late night David O’Docherty. The audience were in full party mode. 1 man and a tiny Casio keyboard smashes it for an hour.

A little musical segway shows that he is a way more talented musician than he lets on.

Every song has the entire jam packed crowd in stitches. I particularly loved the one about the internet. ITS SO TRUE.

It was our last show of the year and we ended on a high. There is no one that writes funnier songs than David and I think that this is maybe my favourite show he’s done (and I’ve seen a few)

I think you stink Assembly Roxy

A B movie horror musical created by Nick Helm complete with Rob Kemp who we saw doing the Elvis Dead a couple of years ago. I’m in.

Even the Queue going up to the theatre was fun. We journeyed up to what seemed to be the high turret of a spooky castle into a theatre full of horror noises, tombstones and a small trampoline??

It felt like getting on a ghost train. We spotted umbrellas at the front of the stage which was a bit worrying but thankfully they were just props and not (and now we are going to cover you…. in blooooooood ha ha ha)

And then it kicked off, eyeballs were flying everywhere, beach balls were bouncing round. We got bubbles. We got bats, we got all the horror right in our faces. It was great.

Nick Helm kicked off the song that the musical is named for and half way through his microphone gave up. This made it even funnier.

The songs are great and everyone is triple threating it. I will always appreciate Nick Helm dressed in a tight red jumpsuit and horns giving it all in a dance routine.

It’s Rob Kemp that always stands out for me. He has a great face for horror (that sounds odd)

He would look perfect in an 80s evil dead style horror film. I haven’t used this particular sentence before but his face is brilliant.

Another must see for the fringe. As promised it scared the shit out of us.

Roots Church Hill Theatre (EIF)

Finally, finally a comfy theatre after a week of fringe theatre venues. Yes please.

I’ve been interested in the 1927 company for a while but never seemed to be at the Fringe at the right time.

So I was very excited about this and it lived up to my expectations.

A collection of funny folk tales narrated by their friends and family. And around this there is a set like nothing I’ve seen at the fringe.

The cast become part of the huge screen showing us glorious cartoons and artwork. It looks gorgeous and seeing the actors amongst it is really thrilling.

How do they do it? It has the same vibe as those early silent films. The only difference is, this isn’t black and white. This is a stage full of colour.

Some of the little stories work better than others. The cat one surely must be everyone’s favourite. I also loved the king and his wife who must be obedient and let him get away with all kinds of crap.

I’ve read enough old folk tales to know that clearly many of them were written to make sure women knew their place.

It went down well in the theatre with all us ‘sisters’ being horrified at the turn out of this one.

This is yet another fringe must see for being utterly unique. You come out feeling full of colour and joy.

Catching comets Pleasance Courtyard. bunker two

We managed to catch the show just after Boulder and I’m So glad we did.

This is a one man show dealing with a relationship and an end of the world action film set up. The set is really well done in Bunker 2. The lighting effects look great as the action hero battles through the bad guys to try and save the world.

There are 4 pillars around the stage that produce really effective neon lights that change though out. Between the pillars there are ropes where we can see our earth suspended in the sky. Along with the comet that is on course to destroy he world. It works really well.

We get two story lines that twist together. One, how he would like to be. The bad ass hero. And the other, his real life self that can’t help but ruin a good thing.

The writing is great and the acting is perfect for it. He’s a really likeable guy and you root for him throughout. That hour passed really quickly. A great show

Boulder Pleasance Fourth

When I was younger there was a late night animation show on channel 4 that I adored.

It consisted of absolutely terrifying stop motion puppetry and animation and yes. It gave me nightmares but they have all stayed with me.

Boulder gave me that vibe. The puppets were so beautiful and a little creepy in a really good way.

What an incredible show. The staging was just wonderful. A giant boulder fills the stage and throughout the hour a puppet tries to roll that boulder up a hill.

Each day, the same. Plans are foiled and the stage resets.

The music suits it perfectly. The singing is beautiful and every second you are caught up with will he do it this time?

I won’t lie. Near the end I got quite teary eyed. It really got to me. It was absolutely enchanting.

Not a second is wasted and the movement created for the puppets by the cast looked really stunning.

Unfortunately the run has ended and we caught it on the last day. Which is a shame because of you went to the Fringe and missed this you missed a blinder.

I am an absolute sucker for a puppet.

Hauntology The Space Niddry street. #edfringe

It’s Friday night and Niddry street is heaving with people smashing back alcohol and it’s getting a bit lairy outside.

We get a flier and told about a show that has a David Lynch vibe. She must be a mind reader because we are the biggest Lynch fans (I’ve got on a twin Peaks t shirt so maybe just good at spotting that)

You walk in and straight away you go from Friday night Carnage to the Silencio. A dark stage with a

Gramophone. A small tv. A piano and lots of other oddities that make you feel like you have walked into a David Lynch set.

The show is one of the best things we have seen at the Fringe this year. It was a real privilege to be there.

The music created was absolutely what the title suggests. Really haunting, ethereal and unearthly with the static, backing soundtrack, cello, piano and theremin.

Monelise has the most incredible voice. If you had to try and attempt a comparson, you can think of Kate Bush, Cocteau twins, Julee Cruise, Rebekah Del Rio but it’s so much it’s own thing it’s very difficult to say to someone, go see this… it sounds like……

What I do know is, is that if David Lynch saw this, these guys would be on his next project without a doubt.

This is a big recommendation because they really are something special. And a huge relief from what’s going on outside.

There aren’t too many more shows at #Edfringe left so I urge you to get tickets and see in the witching hour in Hauntology

The Katet Vs John Williams. the jazz bar.

Wowsers. What an end to the day. We stayed up late to get our fix of jazz and funk with a big band.

We started with Star Wars today and we ended with Star Wars. A huge singalong to all the big tunes. Absolutely brilliant.

The Katet are an incredible band. Really tights and all there takes on these film scores were just out of this world.

The was a particular fan of Jurassic park. And what absolutely started the party. The cantina music from Star Wars of course. Everyone went nuts for it.

They are doing it all over again next week and I can’t recommend it enough.
